What do you do each day that doesn’t contribute to your writing — and can you eliminate it?
Hmm, let me see — something I do daily that doesn’t support my writing — um — oh — wait —
Oh. Oh. I just got it. In fact, I just caught myself in the act of doing it.
I read while I’m writing.
Often it’s the ever-popular Internet, whether I’m ostensibly doing research for the thing I’m writing or “just taking a moment” (and another, and another…). Sometimes it’s an actual, physical book, magazine, or catalog. Just some mental comfort food to have close at hand, that’s all.
Slows the writing down to a crawl, makes it difficult to follow the thread of my thought much of anywhere.
And then the fog rolls in. Huh? Wha? Where was I?
Why do I do this?
And can I stop doing this completely? I don’t know. Honestly, I don’t even know if I would want to do that. What I can do is to notice the pattern, be more conscious of it, and say to myself, “Okay, here we are again. What would you like to do?”
Let’s see where that leads me.
