I just finished watching Takashi Miike’s The Happiness of the Katakuris. It’s a very strange movie, and undoubtedly not everyone’s cup of chai.
Still, it’s got me thinking about how very grateful I am to all the strange artists out there — the ones who create movies, songs, and stories that are decidedly not mainstream, not conventional.
I see these kinds of things, and I feel joy; I feel hope. This simply can’t be such a dreary and mundane world as it sometimes seems, if art like this exists — not only exists, but succeeds, enough that it crosses my path and I get to experience it for myself!
So, oddballs everywhere, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. When I grow up, I hope I’ll be just like you.
